When it comes to web hosting, clearly you’re going to figure how much space is needed for your web hosting. Well, clearly you can’t buy web hosting by the megabyte or anything, so what you’re after is going to be a certain range, rather than an exact number.
Determining exactly how much space you’re going to need has a lot to do with what sort of a website you’re hosting. It breaks down into a handful of categories. Depending on what your needs are, what your goals are as a webmaster, you’ll fall into a different category, but you’ll probably fall into ONE of these, at the very least.
Basic Web Content
If the sort of content you’re providing is largely text without a lot in the way of images and video and other sorts of media, then you really don’t need much in the way of hosting. Honestly, you may be good with a gigabyte or less, and that’s really only for security reasons, so that you have the option of including a video or two or some images when and if you ever feel the need to do so.
Honestly, text and basic HTML take up almost no space at all. While a single text document was a real hard drive hog back in the eighties and early nineties, today, a text file, even an HTML file, takes up such an incredibly small amount of space that you could literally host an entire blog on a hard drive the size of a pinhead.
Image Based Content
When it comes to image based content, say, webcomics, photo galleries and so on, you’re going to need to look for just a bit more web space than you’re getting with web content. One gigabyte will cover you at first, but after a few months, you’ll find that it doesn’t leave you much breathing room.
Now, unless every single image is incredibly high definition, you don’t need a ton of web space. Something like ten to twenty gigabytes should keep you covered at least for the first year or two of working with the site. Beyond that, you may have to expand (or you may not) but by that point, you’re going to probably have enough money to buy some more web hosting without having to worry about it. Point is, ten to twenty gigs should cover you at first.
Video/Music/Interactive Media/Multimedia Based Content
When it comes to video, music, interactive media like games and such and other multimedia, you’re going to need a lot more space for your site. Now, you may need somewhere around a hundred gigs, you may only need ten or twenty for smaller projects. But the general idea here should be to get unlimited hosting.
With unlimited hosting, you simply don’t need to worry about hoe much space you’re using. In other words, you can spend more time worrying about the content itself and a little less time worrying about how much space you’re using up.
