If you’re new to the world of websites and have just finished your very first website masterpiece then the world of web hosting may be confusing or even intimidating! There are many types of web hosting out there and it can often be difficult to choose the right one but it can be vital that you choose the right one for your kind of website, especially if it’s for a business or other money making schemes. For the average Joe, any kind of web hosting that is dirt cheap will do. That can be any kind of personal website which is just about you and your hobbies. There is not really much point to these kinds of sites other than to just show friends, and besides, this kind of site is a dying breed thanks to social media sites like Myspace and Facebook.

Something that is to be expected of even the cheapest web hosting these days is that the package come with PHP and MySQL, or some form of server side scripting and database functionality. If you are after free hosting, which does exist, then finding one that has such features will be nearly impossible, nearly! You might wonder why on Earth you would need these features if you don’t know what they are. The fact is that spending ten minutes reading up on a few things that make a website easy to manage, like PHPs include function, make them worth having and implementing. Another reason to covet these features is that if your site does really well, you may want to have a serious look at developing your site further.

The above mentioned forms of hosting are common forms of shared hosting. That means your webspace is shared with others, so you may have a hundred websites all on the same server. This can have a few downsides but is fine for individual and small business websites. Speed can sometimes be an issue if the server is experiencing heavy traffic, and you certainly wouldn’t want to share a server with someone who is running resource intensive scripts although most web hosting services forbid such activity.

At the other end of the scale you have a form of web hosting called dedicated hosting. This is where an entire machine is at your disposal and only your website will be hosted on it. As you can probably expect, this isn’t the cheapest form of hosting! Costs for a dedicated server start from £100 per month, but there is another way to get most of the advantages a dedicated server has to offer for a cheaper price. Virtualised dedicated servers give you similar advantages like a unique IP address, total control over your hosting and you being the only one on there. The virtualised part comes from the fact that the server has been split into multiple OSs (operating systems) each having server software run simultaneously on each one. Such servers must also have virtualisation technology enabled CPUs, otherwise virtualisation and VMware will not run. Clearly this is a good option for people and businesses who are anticipating rapid growth both in web traffic and web site content.

When huge numbers of people are flocking to your website (tens of thousands), it may be time to upgrade to at least virtualised dedicated hosting!
